The sort of photographs I make don’t have a lot to do with photography. They are the by-products of living an interesting life. I have given up on the decisive moment and am collecting lots of indecisive moments – the bits in between.
I have a photo in OFF THE WALL, an upcoming group exhibition at Lux Gallery at JCU in Cairns, a celebration of off the wall photography – and photographers.
Exhibition curator Glen O’Malley says of the show, “What I feel the photographers have in common is a passionate, almost obsessive, wonder about the photographic image, and a continuing enjoyment of producing work that is slightly off the wall.”
OFF THE WALL has a great line up with Jenn Brazier, Victoria Cooper and Doug Spowart, Peter Kelly, Robert Mercer, Glen O’Malley, Ian Poole and Kellie White all having pics in the show.
The exhibition runs 5 April to 5 May 2012. You can find it at MacGregor Road, Smithfield, Cairns. 07 4042 1853. Open Tuesday – Saturday 10am-4pm.
In case you haven’t heard yet, my new exhibition has opened at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery. You can see some of the shots below.
The exhibition is called The Last Show and Re-shoot. The Last Show is a collection of photographs I took at the Toowoomba Show over 25 years ago. The 1985 Toowoomba Show was the last one at the old showgrounds. In recent years I’ve returned to photograph the Toowoomba Show at its new location to portray how it looks all these years later.
I have lived with the images from The Last Show for more than 25 years and they still speak to me. They evoke a real sense of being there. Matching them up with images I took at the 2010 Toowoomba Show contrasts the changes that have occurred over that time.
The real world fascinates me and I never felt the need to embellish what I see around me. Remarkably some of the images show great change while other things don’t seem to have changed at all.
