Neville Anderson is back in Tamworth

“My first visit to the Tamworth Country Music Festival was for two days in 1982. I sang in the Coca Cola Talent Quest at the back of the Loco and the backing band included a couple of young Mc Cormack brothers. Jan Kelly and the Kelly Gang played that night. We also saw Jean Stafford and Roger Knox at the RSL,” said Neville.

“I never got back again until 1994 and camped at the Showground. It was one of the best weeks in my life. There were top quality full working country bands everywhere and it was almost impossible to see everything I wanted to see. The Workers Club was in full swing then. Scarlet Rose was a big hit upstairs at the Tudor.”

“I remember in 1996 I was camped at the show grounds again and became quite good mates with a bunch of guys from Melbourne. One of them had made it into the Star Maker final and the rest had come to support him. Somewhere along the way there was a falling out in the group and one of them left and took the car but left the trailer/van and the other three. I was living in Melbourne at the time so when the festival was over we hooked the trailer up to my car and they jumped in with me.”

“I think I only missed one year between 1994 and 2006 and I got moved to Tamworth with work for a couple of years in the late 90’s. I was always disappointed that there was not more country music in Tamworth during the rest of the year.”

“I used to be a regular busker on Peel street after Alec Beckett asked me to give him a spell one year after seeing me standing in the crowd. He had heard me at one of the talent quests. I will go for a walk this year and hope to see Alec and maybe join him for a song or two.”

“If anyone asks me what the festival is like – it is the best ten days of fun you can have without agro.”

  • Chris Callaghan and Tim Rickards in the front bar at the Goodies

“I will be back in Tamworth for a fresh look after being absent for the last four years. I am doing a bit of hosting and a couple of spots to begin promoting a brand new Album called Lonely Places.”

“The thing I have missed most over the last four years is catching up with everyone. I’ve read Peter Busher is doing a show and that Shane Tenaki has a new album so I am hoping to catch them. This will be the year of checking out the various venues and getting a feel for how I might be able to become a regular part of the Festival again.”
