The hard working Davidson Brothers hit Tamworth

The Davidson Brothers seem to have been around for a long time. Brothers Hamish and Lachlan are amongst the hardest working musicians on the Australian music scene. They’ll certainly have some calluses after their gruelling Tamworth gig schedule.

The Davidson Brothers seem to have been around for a long time. Brothers Hamish and Lachlan are amongst the hardest working musicians on the Australian music scene. Their efforts paid off when they won Golden Guitars in 2009 & 2010 and Group of the Year at the Australian Independent Country Music Awards in 2010.

I’m a fan and I love these guys. Australian bluegrass pioneer Trevor Warner is a good judge of talent and he loves them too. “The Davidson’s are nothing short of sensational and are taking the Australian country music scene by storm,” according to Trevor.

I caught up with Hamish earlier in the week while he was packing for Tamworth.

Lachlan’s first Tamworth visit

“This will be our 14th Tamworth in a row. Our Mum drove us up the first year in 1998 after many recommendations. We spent the week busking acoustically in Peel Street along with our younger sister Ailsa on the fiddle and entered every talent quest Mum could get us into. We won the junior Busking Award our first year, and were invited down to shows with Bill Chambers and the Bluegrass Breakfast. Also that year we met Charlie Daniels which was a real highlight.”

Lachlan’s Tamworth health tip

“Well doing breakfast shows and partying most nights takes a real toll on your health. We have a favorite cafe for after our morning shows where we chill out. We would tell you but then everyone would go, and we wouldn’t get a seat 🙂 ”

“Hamish and I increase our fitness and health in the lead up to meet the demands of so much physical performance. I have a naturopath at our morning shows who gives us vitamin C to help with the voice and fight the constant air conditioning. Getting drunk in the bar is not good for your voice; most singers already know this, but we found out the hard way after I lost my voice completely in 2006.”

Lachlan’s must see gigs

“(Apart from ours) include Andy Baylor’s Cajun Combo, Troy’s show is always great for seeing some spontaneous duet performances. We always check out the street for young musicians and invite them down to our shows, as that is what everyone did for us through the years. Also our friend, Jerry Salley is out from Nashville singing at the Southgate on Friday 21st. He’s a well-known American songwriter for Bluegrass Country.”

“Depending on your age, that will determine were to go in Tamworth to meet girls. Ha-ha. Always fun to pub-crawl down Peel Street. The first Thursday in town before the festival officially kicks off is always a highlight as you catch up with all the other artists before it gets too crazy! It’s like the biggest party of the year.”

First Golden Guitar

“Hamish & I won our first Golden Guitar in 2009 after 6 nominations. It was a huge thrill, most artists who travel to Tamworth hope one day to walk up those steps. It felt like we were finally part of the Australia Country Music Family.”
